Honda’s problem playground case-study

Creative idea, channels and execution explained for the ‘Problem Playground’ campaign for Honda by Wieden + Kennedy London. Visit the campaign website here – which is slow, but worth the wait. Another good idea from the team at W+K – that is clearly delivered in all channels and brilliantly executed – beyond the special build!

Thanks to CASEMOVIES (my new favourite creative resource).

…and if you think the soundtrack is familiar… well it is. Remember the rescue scene from Life Aquatic? (its below) and the track is called Ping Island.

2009 Web Trend Map

Update: zoomable version of web trend map here, thanks to Jax

Web Trend Map 4 Final Beta

Who has an A3+ printer so I can actually read it without scrolling back and forth and up and down? Not that I’m complaining – thanks for the hard work and genius IA – keep up the good work.

Five photos with little explanation

Playing around with Ricoh GR on a mini tripod with a bottle of Talisker Whisky and a long exposure gave result to these two moody shots from Berrima last autumn.

I kayak on the harbour a few times a week. Love the way the morning light magnifies the colour on the kayaks.

Rachael gave me a Nikon D90 as an engagement present (which rocks). Two shots from a stroll to Bronte and back.

Stop-frame helicopter sea rescue

Great stop-frame story of a fisherman’s rescue from the rocks near Tamarama beach by photographer Keith Loutit. The photo effect makes the people seem like plastic figurines in a diorama.

I’ve found a few tutorials on how to make this effect with stills photography on Digg.

Twitter data – the anti timesheet?

Katie Chatfield mentioned Xefer.com/twitter data visualisation tool at Ad:Tech Sydney. The tool allows you to plot a ‘twitterers’ behaviour over a week. Simply enter their profile and with a mixture of Google’s Chart API and Yahoo Pipes it magically plots the ‘twitterers’ habits. With a mild fascination in data and understanding online behaviour – it caught my imagination…

Since joining Twitter I’ve posted 696 times as @benhamin. It would seem that Fridays at 10am I have the most to say and 3pm I’m consistently blurting out 140 characters to who will ever listen.

It’s probably better to look at some serious Twitterers, rather than my poor excuse, so I felt that the lads from Bannerblog might be a good start. Top AU blog and all that.

Ashley aka 100ftzombie. 2,751 tweets so far. 10am Saturday is a hotspot, but Ash does most of his tweeting between 9 – 11pm. Work is for work and then the tweets coming flying out at night.
100ftzombie Twitter behaviour (2751)

Ashadi Hopper. 1,170 tweets to date. Pretty consistent overall – but 10am is a strong time – after reading the news perhaps?

Who else, Gavin over at Servant of Chaos has tweeted a staggering 7,422+ times. Monday’s 11 – 3pm – what’s happening Gav?

64 red bulls & 9 gallons of coffee

The making of Telematics City by Hook. Is a data visualization trip through the creation of a 3d city, from app to wireframe, to render and fly-through – featuring 1200 buildings. It seems to be commissioned by Toyota and Lexus and I think is interactive from the console / kiosk featured on the Hook website.

Who ever was the creative team on this – I hope your livers are alright?

Find out anymore – let me know.

Vision of 2019

Hoorah for Tom, another inspirational share to add to my collection of ‘digital educational’ videos (now topping 14).

“When Microsoft decides to imagine the future, it never fails to impress.”

Shame they struggle with the present.

M is for Mustang, B is for Boombox

M is for Mustang

B is for boombox

My lovely friend Claudia Pearson, who lives in Brooklyn NYC, is an artist and illustrator. We were chatting during that cross over time, when one country awakes and the other is preparing for sleep, and got to talk about her new work. Pictured above are some of my favourite ‘alphabet’ illustrations.

We also got to talking about the credit crunch and how the homemade / craft movement is seemingly picking up, as people focus on their individual skills. I’d hazard a guess that Etsy.com is doing rather well at the moment. Has anyone seen evidence of this, more markets, more craft websites, Etsy accounts, other than mine and Claudia’s hunch?

To see more of Claudia’s ‘alphabet’ work (S is for Scooter, C is for Chopper) visit her Etsy shop.
…and continuing the theme check out her illustrated book, Tribal Alphabet, on Amazon.

Entertainment and communication in 2010

Thanks to Faris for his ’2 cents worth’. This clip outlines the ubiquity of the internet. The shift from search to share and touches on the digital divide.

Another two videos that explore digital

This first clip, thanks to Tyson Lundbech via Twitter explores how mobile technologies can reconnect local communities to their environment.

Tyson’s timing couldn’t be better – I’ve just come back from lunch at Google where I saw a demo of the gPhone – in particular seeing how the camera, Google Maps, and wiki content can be integrated as the user aims the phones camera at different buildings. The possibilities are very apparent.

…and from another ‘video finding video’ search, I re-found:

Prometeus: The Media Revolution
I’m sure this is on my blog somewhere already, but good to get it on the list. In the way that Googlezon is the view of a possible future – so is this – in the year 2027

Two more video’s that educate on digital

On my quest to make digital more understandable via video I found two more clips of note.

Perhaps a bit geeky, but essential in getting the back story, the animation “History of the internet” describes how the internet evolved from 1957 – 2009.

Copyright, who better to explain the importance of Creative Commons – than CC themselves.

One clip lead to the other on PICOL blog

8 videos that inspire & explain the opportunities of digital

Need your help in finding more.

Last year I started teaching the ADMA Digital Certificate in Marketing thanks to an introduction from Mike at Profero.

14 Tuesday nights later, great guest speakers, the marking of 28 exams and presentations – I’m doing it all again.

As you can imagine keeping the course up-to-date is a challenge in its own right. So we’re currently reviewing and updating the content. Seeing as I have an audience of digerati [and my Mum] I felt that you might be able to help. We try to use ‘rich media’ wherever possible, videos, online demo’s, case-studies etc.

To follow is a collection of videos that help explain the opportunity of digital. We’ve shown some before and there’s others that I’ll definitely consider for this semester – but I want to make sure I’m not missing some gems? – all help much appreciated!

ps. any prospective guest speakers out there (search, mobile, usability, email, creative, analytics, databases, social etc.) ? raise your hand!

1. Googlezon, Epic 2015
I believe this dates back to 2004. A view of the future that’s already ahead of time.

2. Did you know?
Jen Wilson sent this round yesterday. Great summation of our insignificance in the emerging world and the significance of embracing new ways now. Certainly gets you pumped for action.

3. The break up
Its and old one, but a classic. Spells out the fact that the consumer has changed.

4. Inspiration, anyone? (the sequel to ‘The Break Up’)
If you work in an ad agency – surely you can relate to this. BIGGER LOGO

5. A short history of marketing
Only recently found this. From the early days of advertising to the sensory overload of today. This animation spells out exactly why marketing has to change.

6. The machine is us/ing
Probably the best explanation of Web 2.0 there is.

7. An anthropological introduction to YouTube
Its almost an hour long but worth the time if you have it.

8. The marketing of Radiohead
Ian Tait put this together. I like it because it shows how he reconsiders Radiohead [who's music he didn't like] based on the way they approached the launch of In Rainbows and the subsequent marketing of the band since they’ve left their record label.

Light playing with sparklers

Like writing your name in lights, well kind of, you know when you grab a sparkler and frantically shift it around until your message is scared on your retina? Well here is a movie dedicated to that pastime. With the amount of views its received it would seem I’m a bit slow in discovering it.

However the first time I saw Pika Pika (JP blog) was on SBS last night.

I’d watch it in HD, looks better, just click the icon far left of the YouTube player.
